Phase transitions and phase coexistence: equilibrium systems versus externally driven or active systems - Some perspectives

چکیده
A tutorial introduction to the statistical mechanics of phase transitions and coexistence is presented, starting out from equilibrium systems nonequilibrium steady-state situations in externally driven systems, such as unmixing sheared binary fluid mixtures, lattice gas model, onset Rayleigh-Bénard convection. Then, some models for separation active where particles possess internal motility, are discussed, emphasizing what one can learn by extending analysis methods study computer simulations systems. Specific examples will include colloid-polymer mixtures colloids assumed be particles, Brownian particles. The extent which concepts familiar still useful critically discussed.

Boundary-Induced Phase Transitions in Equilibrium and Non-Equilibrium Systems
Boundary conditions may change the phase diagram of non-equilibrium statistical systems like the one-dimensional asymmetric simple exclusion process with and without particle number conservation. Using the quantum Hamiltonian approach, the model is mapped onto an XXZ quantum chain and solved using the Bethe ansatz. This system is related to a two-dimensional vertex model in thermal equilibrium....
متن کاملPhase transitions in periodically driven macroscopic systems.
We study the large-time behavior of a class of periodically driven macroscopic systems. We find, for a certain range of the parameters of either the system or the driving fields, the time-averaged asymptotic behavior effectively is that of certain other equilibrium systems. We then illustrate with a few examples how the conventional knowledge of the equilibrium systems can be made use of in cho...
متن کاملAgreement Percolation and Phase Coexistence in Some Gibbs Systems
We extend some relations between percolation and the dependence of Gibbs states on boundary conditions known for Ising ferromagnets to other systems and investigate their general validity: percolation is defined in terms of the agreement of a configuration with one of the ground states of the system. This extension is studied via examples and counterexamples, including the antiferromagnetic Isi...
متن کاملPhase Transitions in Self-Driven Many-Particle Systems and Related Non-Equilibrium Models: A Network Approach
We investigate the conditions that produce a phase transition from an ordered to a disordered state in a family of models of two-dimensional elements with a ferromagnetic-like interaction. This family is defined to contain under the same framework, among others, the XY-model and the Self-Driven Particles Model introduced by Vicsek et al. Each model is distinguished only by the rules that determ...
